MPEG-4/AVC Embedded Video

I noticed that the embedded video I posted in my last post didn’t show up properly in my RSS feed reader, so this post is an attempt to get things right.

The goal here is an accessible, high quality embedded video that works properly on both this site, and through syndication.

First, the MPEG-4 AVC Video:

Jump To: MPEG-4/AVC Embedded Video

Second, the embedded youtube video:

Jump to YouTube

Here’s hoping this works…

Edit: (2007-09-28 01:05 -0400) Added placeholder images for google reader, which will strip the flash object from the feed.

  1. After doing some more research, I’ve learned that the common web based feed readers strip out OBJECT and EMBED tags for security reasons. Google Reader has a whitelist of “known good” websites, if you use the proper EMBED tag.

So, it looks like I won’t be able to stream MPEG-4/AVC video from my own web host and have it play automatically in a feed reader.

With that said, the object is getting completely stripped out, leaving the reader with no indication that something should exist there. I’m about to look into the NOEMBED tag to see if that makes it through syndication well enough.

  2. Finally got it all sorted. Google strips the object tag, but leaves children in place. The solution is simply to include an image object with a link to the main article, which will not be rendered when the object tag is honored.
